A story spanning over 160 years
From humble boarding house to boutique accommodation, discover the rich heritage of these elegant Georgian townhouses.
'Portsea Place' is constructed as a row of elegant Georgian townhouses, showcasing the refined architectural style of the era with soaring ceilings and classic proportions that remain a defining feature today.
The townhouses originally functioned as a boarding house, providing accommodation for dock workers, travelers, and business merchants. This established Portsea Place as a vital part of Hobart's hospitality landscape, serving those who came to the bustling port city for work and trade.
'Portsea Place' is thought to have been named in honour of one of the original tenants, Phineas Moss, who had immigrated to Van Diemen's Land from Portsea, Hampshire, England. Jewish by religion and a pillar of society, a picture still stands in his honour at the Hobart Synagogue, cementing his legacy in the city's history.
After extensive renovations completed in December 2024, these historic townhouses have been transformed into boutique hotel-style apartments. The renovation carefully preserves the vintage character through retained soaring ceilings and original display fireplaces, while introducing sumptuous contemporary finishes and all modern conveniences.
